Travel Diary - Inle lake part 1

After a long and rough night our nightbus finally arrived at the busstation, almost three hours late. We then took a five minute cab ride to inle lake and was stopped right before entering the village, the reason? A frickin' toll booth where we had to pay 5 dollars each just to get in.

We got to our hostel, dropped our bags and out on the lake we went. Our guides were two non-english speaking boys of about 12. The nature was lovely and we got to see their floating tomato fields, which stretched on for km at end.

The next stop was a big market at the other side of the lake. At this point we were super hungry and so our main goal was to get some food! That didn't stop us from getting some nice souvenirs first though. Robert has decided to get a bracelet from every country and so we started here - by haggling like madmen.  He got his own bracelet for 1500kyat after haggling it down from the original 7000, and then two bracelets for me for 2000 kyat instead of 7000 each. By the end of our souvenir shopping we were pretty pleased with our performance and went to eat at the local market-restaurant.

We decided to go for fried rice with pork and by this time we had not eaten a proper meal for almost 24 hours so we happily gobbled down the food.

Then we went back to the boat to continue our tour of inle lake. But that's for the next post.

Floating tomatoes without end

Half of these houses didn't even have ladders

The boatmen came up alongside our boat and tried to sell their goods. When we wanted to disembark we had to climb on the other boats to get to the shore.
