Travel Diary - More of Vientiane

Waking up well rested we decided on a big breakfast and took our time in choosing from the hotel buffet.

When we were done with eating we said goodbye to the Austrians and set out to explore a little bit more of Vientiane. First up we found a park with nice lengths of grass just becide the water and training gear for the locals to do exercise. Ofcourse with Wayu being naturally curious, she had to try one of the machines out. It was waay harder than it might seem and we both had a few laughs about it.

While being intent on exploring the rest of the park, the heat was starting to get staggering, and before to long we were melting away. We fell into a weird conversation about whether or not you should point with the whole hand when, lo and behold, a huge statue rose before us. It settled the debate :) and next to it they sold ice cold water so win win.

We parked ourselves under some trees and tried to cool down a bit as Wayu was starting to get the signs of heatstroke and after a while we were ready to have a go at some more exploring.

We didn't even take 10 steps before realising that we were right next to the presidential palace and so we snapped a pic ofcourse.

We slowly wound our way through a maze of streets and found ourselves in an antique shop. Robert saw some nice postcards and decided to send one of his friends in Dublin. The manager of the shop came of as a bit stressful as he hovered over Roberts shoulder while he was writing. Finally he relented when he understood that Robert would take his time and we were left solo in the shop to have a closer look around. He had some really pretty things and some quite obscure which we unfortunally forgot to take pictures of :/

After leaving the antique shop and with postcard in hand, we found ourselves on collision course with a Swedish bakery. Neither of us needed much pushing before we were starring at all the lovely treets, trying to decide what pastery that should mark the occation. Deciding on a cinnamon bun and a tiger cake, we sat down for a taste. Two words are perfect to describe the situation except delisious:

Sugar rush!

Robert even went to the point where he started shaking and his hands held a slight tremor for almost an hour. It never really dawned on us that we ate that much sugar back home and that they had almost none of it in the countries we'd visited so far.

Full of energi but exhausted at the same time we slowly found our way back to the hotel. When we got back we had some time to spare before getting on a nightbus that would start the journey into Cambodia and Siem Reap. We ordered the last dish which we hadn't tried of the local cousine, Tom Yum soup.

It was basicly broth with different sized chunks of chilli in it and neither one of us could stomach more than a few spoons before we felt on fire. Luckily the transfer bus arrieved almost 30 minutes early and thus we had no choise but to leave the remains of soup. What a shame :p

When we got on the nightbus we were a bit shocked at how small the beds were. Robert would cover an entire bed from head to toe while in sitting position...
And on top of that they were at most 60 cm wide. Another shocking realisation then dawned on us. We were supposed to share beds. And just like that, we started our way towards Cambodia.
